I’ve come to realize that people read and use my Facebook wall rather often. So allow me to say this, because I feel I need to: Sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, are ethical guidance, they are not in and of themselves arguments.
Our tradition developed its vision of Islam by engaging all of the sources methodically, rigorously, and reasonably; to throw around hadith and use them to claim a conclusive argument is to miss the point entirely, and in so doing, to do a tremendous disservice to our law and our philosophy.
